Dodge Trucks - Why aren't they big in the custom scene?

I think we're pretty much saying the same thing, just in a different context. When it comes to customizing, the availability of parts, whether it's aftermarket, or OEM integrated, is a big deal to builders. And everything you said about GM is dead on. It's been an asset and a liability on their behalf.
The popularity of the New Hemi has grown since the last time I've written here. It's still not what I'd look for in a custom build, but that's more of a personal deal (I love and prefer the Wedge over the Hemis....), It just took some time for builders to figure out how to get more out of it. Seemingly every month, engine builders are finding more ways to create more power out of the New Hemi. Coincidentally, I've been planning my build with the thought of swapping out the 4.7 V8 for a 542 ci EFI Wedge in it's place for about 2 years now (taking out the 45RFE for a 727 in the process). The only real issue holding me back is being laid off from work....
Last thought here, Dodge trucks are a true customizer's canvas. Due to the limited availability of aftermarket parts, builders of the Dodge Dakotas and Rams have to solve any problem they encounter on their own or with the help of somebody familiar enough with that truck. In the end, no custom Dodge truck is alike. From my understanding, you need patience (ie: well thought out planning) when dealing with the Dodge, when it comes to fab work. It's certainly no cookie cutter like the GM offerings. Whether Off-road or street, Dodge trucks have a style all of it's own, when done correctly. So time well spent on planning in the beginning, is time well earned behind the wheel when it's completed. Nothing worth having is earned in a day.
Right now, there are a lot of Dodge owners doing custom work to their ride(s), so somewhere along the way, somebody is getting the message. More and more Dodge trucks are appearing in Sport Truck and it's sister mag Truckin'. I think people are beginning to see just how good a Dodge can look if you just take the effort to plan for it.
No copycats...
