Im painting my truck Flat black, but im having trouble finding the right paint to use. Everyone i talk to tells me to use something different cuz either it wont look good, wont last long or it scratches real easy. So i dont know what kind of paint to use, even the local body shops dont know. I need to get this done ASAP cuz its my daily driver and its three different colors due to body work. Any tips would be appreciated.

I am going to use Kustom Shop "Hot Rod Flatz" on my 99 Silverado. Here is a link:

They have an awesome color selection as well, so you don't have to go black unless you want to. Check it out!

Lots of choices!

I'm still not sure what color. I am leaning toward red oxide for the rat rod kinda look...but it looks like straight primer...unless I use another color or two for graphics...

Lots of choices!

I painted my '68 with a flat red oxide look. I used a base coat that my local paint guy mixed up for me to look like red oxide. Then I coated the truck in PPG Flex N Flat clear to leave a semi-flat sheen (the last coat of clear went on a bit heavy and in turn added some sheen). I like the fact I have clear on the truck istead of just single stage.

Here's what it looks like.

Thanks Calin. It's so much better seeing the color on a truck. Do you have any pics with the truck outside?

Sanded the sidewall of the tires? Never heard of this before but I am intrigued...the tires look ssooooo clean!

Sadly I only have a few pics of the truck out in the sun, check the link below. I will say my paint looks a little too pink in the sun, so if you have someone mix paint have it mixed a shade or two darker just to be safe. I’m going to patina the paint on my truck to make it look like it has been sitting since the 70’s. That should cure the pink issue.

The side wall thing has been in my mind for a long time…I posted the link of the story so you can see how I did it. I will say one thing it takes a long time and you will have the gnarliest black boogers….

Here’s a link to the resto and painting of the truck:

Just use a flat clear instead of a glossy clear. Just about every well known paint company makes a flat/egg shell clear or an additive that will flatten glossy clear.

When it comes time to spray make sure to really take your time because unlike shooting glossy clear you can't sand out imperfections like runs. Well you can sand them out, but you will need to reshoot another coat instead of polishing to remove the sanding marks.
