If it's got a Powerglide it's not a 3 speed manual...which trans is it?

Regardless...go old school with the column. Just about every tach you can buy comes with a mounting bracket designed to fit into the old shifter mount on your truck column. It was a common mod in the old days to switch to a floor shifter and add a tach, so the tach manufacturers made the mount to fill in the hole left by the hole from the removed shifter lever. The remaining linkage can be left in the column and disconnected under the truck at the base of the column.

If the truck you are buying has a 3 on the tree (Manual) in it now and you are going to install a V8 and a 2-speed Powerglide (automatic) here is my advice.

The simplest way to do this conversion would be to purchase a floor shifter from a company like Hurst. The new aftermarket shifter will use a cable instead of linkage to transmit the movement of the shifter to the transmission. Then you can do like moldman66 said and just remove all the factory stuff.
